Sailing with Phillip Parker King: The John Septimus Roe Letters

With Dr Matthew Fishburn

It is almost 200 years since HMS Mermaid first sailed under the command of PP King to explore the remote coast of Australia.

On board was a young officer called John Septimus Roe whose letters home to his family in Berkshire, England, reveal a beautifully detailed account of the gruelling voyage. Focusing on his collection of natural history and other curiosities, this talk will introduce the Roe letters, purchased by the Library in 2010. Matthew Fishburn’s recent publications include an essay on the fate of the First Fleet vessel Borrowdale.
