You Only Live Once

1937, 86 mins

When Eddie Taylor (Henry Fonda) is released from prison and into the arms of his sweetheart, Joan (Sylvia Sidney), he is determined to turn his life again and leave behind his life of crime. However, Eddie cannot run away from his shadowed past, and he is convicted of a bank robbery and murder and thrown back into prison. Unable to stand life behind bars any longer, Eddie attempts a daring escape, but not without tragic consequences. Directed by Fritz Lang, You Only Live Once was the forerunner to numerous criminal lovers on the run films, such as Bonnie and Clyde and Gun Crazy. This haunting masterpiece, made in the midst of the Great Depression, highlights the underbelly of American life in the 1930.
