A Hoax by Rick Viede
JUDGES' COMMENTS
As if ripped from the headlines, A Hoax deals with the heady issues of cultural appropriation, sexuality, gender, cultural identity and the publishing business as a story of survival by an abused Aboriginal woman is revealed to be the fabrication of a sympathetic but misguided white male social worker whose attempts to conceal his true identity lead everyone into an increasingly blurred moral landscape.
Fiercely satirical, and with biting humour, A Hoax ruthlessly cuts through the pretensions and hypocrisy that often confuse important discussions of racism and oppression without becoming either preachy or trite. Brave and unflinching, A Hoax is a valuable warning that conviction does not justify deceit.
