Millingimbi Histories: work with Louise Hamby, Lindy Allen and Dr. Gumbula
The Indigenous Services team has been working with Louise Hamby (Australian National Univeristy, ANU), Lindy Allen (Museum of Victoria) and Dr. Gumbula (Milingimbi community, Northern Territory) to contextualise historic photographs from the Methodist Overseas Mission collection.
The group visited the Library in late 2013 to view the original collections. The Methodist Church established an Aboriginal mission at Milingimbi in 1923. The set of 97 photographs from this collection show missionary activity from throughout northern Australia (from 1916 to 1938), but especially among the Yolngu people around Milingimbi.
Louise and Lindy have visited Milingimbi many times working with Dr Gumbula and the Milingimbi community to identify as much relevant information about the photos as they can. This valuable information is being compiled to help us upgrade catalogue records.
