Caring for beaches

Topic: Features of places – Australian beaches
Student activity
Geography: Year 1 and Year 2

This is the student activity 1 of 6 of the Features of places: beaches learning activity.

Task No. 1

Processing geographical information – Caring for beaches

Revisit the picture book At the Beach by Ronald Harvey. Students look through the pictures searching for examples of how Penny and Henry care for the beach. Students discuss ways in which they can look after beaches.

Task No. 2

A day at the beach

Select a character from either the book At The Beach by Ronald Harvey or a photograph showing a person doing an activity at a beach. You can bring photos from home showing yourselves or family and friends at the beach. Re-enact the beach scene by standing in a frozen pose just like the photo. Then come to life and act out their activity and also include ways that they can look after for the beach.

Alternatively, recreate one of the source photos but wearing modern clothes. Hold a frozen pose to reconstruct the photo and then move to bring it to life. Explain ways that the beach, clothing, objects and activities have changed or stayed the same from the chosen photo to the present.
