Economist Historical Archive 1843-2013 

The Economist (London) is one of the world’s leading newspapers for politics, current affairs, business news and commentary. This database contains every issue of the paper from 1843 to 2013.

From the front page of the database, you can do a basic search using keywords and narrow your search by date. The database also offers the option to browse the publication by date. The advanced search offers a useful option to refine the search by type of article or illustration.

When displaying the results, the database defaults to sorting the results by oldest first. For better results, change the Sort By box to Relevance.

When viewing an article, use your cursor to click and drag the page up or down within the viewing window. You can choose to view the article full screen, zoom, and adjust the image using the buttons above the article. The article view screen also gives you the option of downloading, printing or emailing the article, as well as the option to view the entire page of the paper or browse that issue.

ProQuest Historical Newspapers: Chinese newspaper collection 

This is a wonderful collection of 22 publications focusing on Chinese news, social issues, contemporary accounts and commentary. The coverage ranges from 1832-1953 (each paper has a different coverage) and are mostly English-language publications.

The Basic search offers a keyword search and returns the results by relevance. From the results screen, you can then narrow the search by date, publication title, or document type.

The Advanced search gives the added option of searching within titles, abstracts, full text etc.

Results can be downloaded, emailed or printed as PDF documents.

Picture Post Historical Archive 1938-1957 

This is the complete archive (in colour) of the British publication, Picture Post. Picture Post used photo-journalism to bring their stories to life, and this archive offers a wonderful glimpse into life in Britain in the mid-20th century. 

From the front page of the database, you can do a basic search using keywords and narrow your search by date. The database also offers the option to browse the publication by date, or by contributor’s name.

When displaying the results, the database defaults to sorting the results by oldest first. For better results, change the Sort By box to Relevance.
