About this item:

Where to live: A.B.C. Guide Sydney & Suburbs, giving particulars of about 100 districts in and around Sydney with numerous illustrations - Invaluable to the Newcomer, Home Builder, Investor and people desiring to rent Furnished or Unfurnished Homes Flats and Residentials.

Compiled by M.A. Harris and published in 1917, Where to live gives an alphabetical account of Sydney’s many suburbs, commenting on their architectural style, data on each suburb's population, train fares, electricity, gas and council rates and average house prices. There are also detailed comments about the unique characteristics of each suburb. Magazine style, the publication is full of advertisements for real estate agents, property developments and various architectural trades, as well as car garages, and home fixtures such as ‘oscillating portal wall beds’.

To the city business man, or the worker, we anticipate that this publication will be a big boon. Without some comprehensive guide such as this, the selection of the most suitable suburb to create a home, as well as the choice of the type of residence desired, is, to say the least of it, a laborious task… (pg vii)

Where to live: A.B.C. Guide Sydney & Suburbs, giving particulars of about 100 districts in and around Sydney with numerous illustrations - Invaluable to the Newcomer, Home Builder, Investor and people desiring to rent Furnished or Unfurnished Homes Flats and Residentials (Q981.1H)

A recently digitised book in the Library’s collection offers are rich resource of information about Sydney’s diverse suburbs and their characteristics from 100 years ago.

Included are lengthy essays on ‘The opportunities for Investments in and around Sydney’; ‘Farmlet and Orchard Opportunities Around Sydney’ and ‘The Selection, planning and fitting of a house’.

Leafing through the pages, there are comments that seem unfamiliar – the description of suburbs such as Hornsby, high above sea-level,  as ‘exceedingly healthy’ because of its elevation, and praise given for its ‘dry atmosphere’. Much is made of council boundaries, and the ridiculousness of having a single suburb divided up by numerous councils. Class differences are discussed openly – the municipality of Hunter’s Hill, for example,  apparently contains ‘homes of all three classes’. But many things haven't changed - regarding Bondi, the publication states, 'Bondi seems to be more favored from a surfer's point of view each year, judging by the huge crowds on the beach this summer, especially whilst the Daylight Saving Act was in force--this attracted thousands of visitors extra each week.'

Though not all of Sydney’s now 658 suburbs are detailed in the book, ‘Where to live’ is an entertaining look at the suburbs that were in existence or under development in 1917.

We are pairing one suburb a week with a corresponding subdivision map from the collection on the SLNSW History Lounge, a Facebook group where you can chat to the Library's curators about the collection and share recollections about your local area.
