Printing, copying and scanning

You can print, copy and scan items in the Library’s reading rooms. Find out how to do this, what you'll need and how much it costs.

Using the Library's multi-function devices (MFD)

You can print, copy and scan from the Library's self-service multi-function devices.

To do this you'll need either a Library card or a copy card. You can get these at a service point and add credit to your card at a reload kiosk.

Note: Scanning is free of charge. Please keep in mind that copyright restrictions still apply.

The reload kiosk accepts:

  • cash in all Australian denominations, except 5c coins and $100 notes – the kiosks do not provide change
  • major credit and debit cards (except American Express), including contactless smartphone payments.

Printing from Library computers

You can print from the free Library computers in the Marie Bashir Reading Room.

When printing, you will be prompted to enter your Library card or copy card number. You can then swipe your card on any multi-function device to collect your printing.

Printing from your device

You can print from your own laptop, tablet or phone. 

You'll need to connect to the Library's free wi-fi first. Then follow the wi-fi printing instructions.

Printing from USB

You can print from USB on the multi-function devices. The USB port is on the left-hand side of the printer screen.

Follow the instructions on the multi-function devices to copy printed material.

Scanning

There are two ways to scan items on the Library's multi-function devices:

  1. Scan the item and send it to yourself by email.
  2. For large files, scan the item and save it to USB.

Using your own equipment

You can copy and scan items with your own equipment, including cameras, phones and hand-held scanners.

Restrictions apply, so speak with staff first. You may need to complete a form.

Scanners are not allowed in the Special Collections area.

Rules for the Special Collections area

Ask permission first

Speak to staff before printing, copying or scanning in the Special Collections area. They'll need to check that material is not in copyright, restricted or too fragile.

Scanning

Hand-held and flat-bed scanners are not allowed in the Special Collections area. With permission from staff, some items can be scanned on the multi-function devices.

Photographing material

  • You must complete a form before photographing material in the Special Collections area.
  • You can use your own equipment, including tripods.
  • You must turn off flash.

Ordering copies of collection items from the Library

You can order copies of the following items from the Library's collections:

  • articles from magazines and journals
  • chapters from rare books
  • manuscripts
  • images, such as paintings, photographs and maps
  • fine art prints
  • sound recordings
  • video recordings.
