About the organisation

The State Library of New South Wales is governed by the Library Council of New South Wales. It operates under the Library Act 1939. The State Library reports through Arts NSW, Department of Arts, Sport and Recreation to the Hon. Frank Sartor, MP, Minister for Planning, Minister for Redfern Waterloo, and Minister for the Arts.

The Library Council of New South Wales consists of nine members, each appointed for a three-year term for a maximum of nine years.

The State Library is led by the State Librarian and Chief Executive, Ms Regina Sutton, and supported by an Executive team, responsible for managing the Library’s operations. This team covers the following divisions.

Collection Management Services: This is responsible for developing, managing and preserving the Library’s collections to ensure their access, maintenance and interpretation by the people of New South Wales and researchers throughout the world.

Innovation, Education and Development: This manages the provision of programs, services and products to promote awareness of the collections and support for the Library. It also manages corporate communications, including media relations, exhibitions, publication and design services, public and education programs, volunteers, and the Library Shop.

Electronic Library Services: This provides leadership and management of digital projects, and information and communications technology resources and services to meet the Library’s corporate objectives and, through NSW.net, to support the public library network in New South Wales.

Public Library Services: This provides leadership, advice and support for the public library network in New South Wales.

Reader Services: This provides library and information services to the people of New South Wales, through the State Reference Library and the Mitchell Library Reading Room and the Sir William Dixson Research Library. Specialist services include legal and health information, and services to clients with disabilities, people of non-English speaking backgrounds, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Finance and Strategy: This is responsible for financial management, human resources, facilities, policy, strategic planning and security.

Both the State Library of New South Wales Foundation and Friends of the State Library of New South Wales promote interest in the Library through fundraising and providing public programs for Friends and supporters.
