We are activating heritage spaces and improving access in and around our Mitchell and Macquarie buildings.
By creating a beautiful multistorey set of circulation galleries with new public lifts and stairs we are connecting all the floors of the Mitchell building and improving the way people understand and move through our spaces.
Currently, the Library does not have an accessible entrance that meets the needs of all of its visitors, including those with restricted mobility, as well as school and tourist groups. The ramp leading to the Macquarie Street entrance does not comply with contemporary standards for disability access, and passage between the two Library buildings is difficult to navigate.
We are working with expert heritage consultants as well as leading designers and creatives to improve access in and around the Mitchell building and provide safe and easy passage between the Mitchell and Macquarie buildings.
We are currently reviewing three different options for a new accessible entrance.
