Multicultural services for NSW residents

This is a guide to multicultural services and information available online, at the State Library and through NSW public libraries for NSW residents.

Books

The State Library has collections in over 40 community languages, including English as a Second Language. Each language collection includes:

  • adult fiction, across a range of genres including romance, mystery and thrillers, adventure stories and popular fiction
  • adult non-fiction such as cookery, health information, history, religion, sports and much more
  • children's resources such as picture books, nursery rhymes, bilingual books and sound recordings
  • large print and audiobooks in some languages are also available

These collections are available for loan to everyone in NSW, through your local public library free of charge.

Online resources 

The State Library subscribes to a range of eResources in languages other than English.  

Before you can access these online resources, you will need a library card

Oxford language dictionaries online

Online dictionaries for Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.

Library PressDisplay

Library PressDisplay is a service which allows anyone who lives in NSW to read newspapers in their own language at home. Over 4,000 international newspapers and magazines from more than 100 countries in 60 languages are available.

Community Language Collection Directory

Use the Community Language Collection Directory to help you locate community language materials held in NSW public libraries.

Newspapers

The State Library collects newspapers in languages other than English published in NSW, many of the newspapers are available on microfilm at the State Reference Library in the Macquarie street building.
