Index to probationary convicts to Sydney and Moreton Bay, 1849-1850

The following resource indexes those probationary convicts (or exiles) who arrived in Sydney and Moreton Bay in 1849 and 1850, after transportation to NSW had effectively ceased in 1842.

How to find your convict

The index usually shows name, age, ship, date and place of trial, sentence and, sometimes, crime (usually only included for the Irish probationary convicts).

STEP 1

Find the Index to probationary convicts to Sydney and Moreton Bay 1849-1850 (see full catalogue details for this item) on one microfiche in one of the blue folders on the 'NSW Archives Kit' shelves in the Family History Service.

TIP
Find some interesting background information to the convict indents and microfiche at the start of the microfiche.
STEP 2

The index is arranged alphabetically, by convict's surname, on the microfiche. Load the microfiche into the microfiche reader and move the carrier horizontally and vertically through the alphabetical list until you find your convict's name and their related details. The information available for each convict may vary. An example of the information in an index entry is as follows:

Surname GREALISH
Given name Thomas
Age 32
Ship Havering
Where tried Galway
Date 23.3.1847
Sentence 7
Crime manslaughter
This index was compiled from various resources including ships' musters and papers, Surgeon Superintendent journals and Irish transportation records. There is no reference to the source of each individual entry.
