Index to convict exiles, 1846-1850
This online resource, from the State Records Authority of New South Wales, indexes British prisoners who were exiled to New South Wales after the 'official' end of convict transportation. They generally had served part of their sentence in gaols in Britain and were given pardons on arrival in NSW.
How to find your convict
- STEP 1
Click Search the Index on the Index to convict exiles, 1846-50 page of the State Records Authority of New South Wales website.
- STEP 2
Enter a name into the search boxes provided. You can narrow your search by entering the name of the ship the felon arrived on or the place of trial (if known). Click Submit Query.
TIP
You can use wildcards if you are unsure of the spelling of a name. For example, Gr%y in the surname field will return 'GRAY' and 'GREY' and 'GRADY'. Wildcards are extremely useful when searching for first names as they allow for middle names and initials. For example, Will% will return 'WILL', 'WILLIAM', 'WILLIAM L', 'WILLIAM JOHN' etc.- STEP 3
Find your felon in the list of search hits returned. Each entry in the list of results will give you a surname, first name, age, ship and other details such as trial date and place, charge and Ticket of Leave district (TLDistrict). This information can help you find further information about your convict such as trial records and tickets of leave.
