How to find out about a convict's family
Search an index to find information about convicts' children in orphan schools. The original records can be viewed on microfilm in the Family History Service.
Find more information about orphan schools and orphan school records on the State Records of NSW website.
- STEP 1
Search the index
Find the NSW orphan school index 1817-1833 (see full catalogue details for this item) on one microfiche in one of the blue folders on the 'NSW Archives Kit' shelves in the Family History Service.
- STEP 2
Load the microfiche into the microfiche reader. The index is arranged alphabetically by surname of the child or petitioner (person applying on the child's behalf - this may be a parent, guardian or employer). Move forward through the alphabetical list until you find the name of the person you are looking for. Each entry generally contains the child's (or petitioner's) name, age (where available), year of admission or petition and parents' names or other comments.
- STEP 3
View the record
The information next to each entry has been indexed from two State Records NSW microfilm reels (No. 2776 and 2777) but doesn't specify where on each reel the information originates. If you would like to look at copies of the original records, you will need to browse through Reels 2776 and 2777 until you find the entry you are seeking. Find the Orphans records (see full catalogue details for this item) on reels on the microfilm shelves in the Family History Service in the State Library of NSW.
- STEP 4
Load the microfilm into the microfilm reader and press the forward button on the microfilm reader to search through the records. As you move forward through the records look out for the name you are searching or dates that match up to the year of petition noted in the index. Searching through these records may be time consuming as you will need to search through both reels until you find the person you are looking for.
