Get a Library card

Get a Library card so you can make the most of the collections and other services. Use it to request books and other items, access eresources, use printers, book study rooms and more.

We are a reference library so books you request from the Library's collections can only be read onsite.

How to get a Library card

Library cards are free of charge. There are two ways to get one.

If you're a NSW resident

  1. Apply online for a Library card.
  2. You'll receive your card number by email the next business day.
  3. The card itself will arrive by mail within 10 business days, or you can choose to collect your card in the Library, from the Marie Bashir Reading Room or the Special Collections area. You'll need to show identification with your current address.

If you're not a NSW resident

  1. Apply online for a Library card.
  2. Collect your card in the Library, from the Marie Bashir Reading Room or the Special Collections area. You'll need to show identification.

Why get a Library card

With a Library card you can:

Original or rare printed material

If you want to use original material or rare printed material, you'll need a Special Collections card.

Where you can use your Library card

If you're a NSW resident

You can use your card to use selected collection items in the Library or to access eresources and ebooks online, from anywhere.

If you're not a NSW resident

You can only eresources and ebooks in the Library itself. 

Before you visit the Library, you can use your card to request collection items to use in the Library when you visit.

Using a NSW public library card

If you're a member of a participating NSW public library, you can get access to eresources and ebooks through the State Library.

You'll need to register your public library card to do this.
