Finding your way around the Library
We have two reading rooms as well as other study areas across two buildings. You will find computers in both reading rooms and free Wi-Fi throughout the Library.
The State Reference Library Reading Room is on Lower Ground 1 (LG1) and Lower Ground 2 (LG2) of the Macquarie Street building.
Visit this reading room to use our collections including most of the
Mitchell Library collections.
On LG1 you will find:
- staff to help you get started
- HSC information area
- current newspapers and magazines
- Legal Information Access Centre (LIAC)
- accessible equipment
- printer copiers.
On LG2 you will find:
- ask a Librarian desk
- request and copying desk
- collect shelves
- family history and local history desk
- past newspapers
- microfilm and microfiche readers
- study rooms
- printer copiers.
You can bring a small bag into the reading room, but bags larger than 25 × 35 × 10 cm will need to be placed in a locker. Find out about hiring a locker at the Library.
You will find the Verandah on LG1 before you go into the State Reference Library Reading Room. You can take your bags and covered drinks into this area.

You will find the reading room in the Mitchell Library building. You can take your bags and bottled water into this room.
In the reading room you will find:

You will find the Special Collections area in the Mitchell Reading Room. Staff in this area can help you with your research using our manuscripts, pictures, oral history, rare books and maps. You cannot take bags, food or drink (including bottled water) into this area.
The Special Collections area is closed on Sundays.
