Membership
The State Library is a a reference and research library and does not lend items directly to individuals.
The Library provides numerous services that are available to the general public without the need to register, such as:
- using reference and open access collection onsite
- searching the Catalogues
- attending events such as talks, courses movies and tours
- visiting our exhibitions
There are some additional benefits that are limited to registered users, friends and club members. You can find out about these benefits here.
Reader's Card
You will need to be registered and hold a Reader's Card to access many State Library services and collections. The Reader's Card can also be used as the State Library Copy Card.
There are two levels of client registration
- A Blue Reader's Card will give you access to post 1980 Mitchell Library published items and State Reference Library services such as electronic resources and stack retrieval services. You can apply for a Blue Reader's card online.
- A Gold Reader's Card: Special Collections will give you access to all of the collections covered by a blue Reader's Card, plus manuscripts, pictures, oral history and rare maps and rare books from the Mitchell and Dixson Libraries and the State Reference Library. You can apply for a Gold Reader's Card online, however you must visit the Library to collect your Gold Reader's Card.
What are the benefits of registering?
- Access to the research collections of the State Library of New South Wales. The State Library is a reference and research library and does not lend its collections directly to individuals.
- Access a wide range of electronic resources available in the Library
- Access to selected subscription databases from home (NSW residents only)
- Advanced set aside of material and retrieval of material from offsite storage
- Future services such as online ordering of images, document and interlibrary loans, personalised accounts and alert services.
Friends of the Library
The Friends are another group of individuals who support the Library through an annual membership program. One of the most rewarding programs in Sydney, your membership of the Friends will provide you with:
- exclusive access to a private members' room
- special discounts and promotions in the Library shop
- discounts at Cafe Trim
- atmitchell, our news-packed, periodical magazine

SL U35 Club
The SL U35 (under 35s) club offers a number of great benefits. As a member you'll get advance notice of all SL U35 talks and events, slide shows, film nights and exhibition launches via the monthly e-newsletter and occasional e-updates and postcards.
You'll also be entitled to the following:
- 10% discount at The Library Shop
- 10% discount at the State Library's Cafe Trim
- Opportunities to win monthly prizes provided by SL U35 sponsors
- Opportunities to attend exclusives previews of new releases by Hopscotch Films
