World Press Photo returns to the Library

Monday, 11 April 2016

The prestigious World Press Photo exhibition, sponsored by Canon, returns to the State Library of NSW for the 16th year from 21 May to 19 June 2016.

Featuring Australia’s first Photo of the Year winner, this free exhibition features over 150 poignant award-winning images from the 59th World Press Photo Contest, selected from 82,951 entries by 5,775 photographers from 128 countries.

Warren Richardson’s Photo of the Year shows a Syrian man handing a baby through barbed wire as he crossed the border from Serbia into Hungary in August 2015; this image also won first prize in the Spot News category. According to Alex Byrne, State Librarian & Chief Executive, “World Press Photo is our most popular exhibition and this year is sure once again to draw huge crowds, especially with the knowledge that an Australian has taken out the top honours in this extraordinary and highly competitive photo contest.”
