Professor Iain Duncan McCalman AO, FRHistS, FASSA, FAHA, FRNS, was born in Nyasaland (Malawi), schooled in Zimbabwe, and earned his BA, MA and PhD in Canberra and Melbourne. He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2007 for services to history and the humanities. He has published numerous books, including Darwin’s Armada (2009) and The Reef— A Passionate History. He is a Fellow of four Learned Academies and a former President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. He is currently Co-Director and co-founder of the Sydney Environment Institute at the University of Sydney.
