Judges' Comments

This thoroughly researched history links the history of a region to much wider national, imperial and global forces in telling the story of the Hunter Valley wine industry. From its humble origins in the convict era, the Hunter developed into a centre for one of Australia’s most important industries, one that now carries Australian identity around the world. This engagingly written and attractively illustrated book narrates a neglected history, and yet one that now influences the lives of millions of Australians.

Julie McIntyre and John Germov combine business, family and social history in an absorbing account that develops a wide range of rich historical themes. In its exploration of the wine industry’s relationship to Indigenous experience, immigration history, business practice and changing taste, this book also tells a larger story about the development of modern Australia. Above all, this is a story of people: their ambitions, visions and ingenuity in creating, and then sustaining in often difficult circumstances, an industry that has become synonymous with modern Australian cosmopolitanism.
