The Art of Taxidermy is a unique and evocative verse novel. Set in an Australian town in the 1960s, we meet a young girl named Lottie who is fascinated with death, collecting birds, lizards and other small dead animals. In response, her father introduces her to the art of taxidermy. Lottie finds in these acts of preservation a means to hold onto the beauty and life of once vibrant creatures. These acts of preservation help her come to terms with the loss of her own mother.
The Art of Taxidermy is a sensitive and moving novel about sadness and loss and how art and beauty can assist our processes of grief. The imagery is original, unexpected and vivid. This novel is full of gorgeous moments of expression and is a memorable read.
