Sponsor a Painting Campaign

In October 2018, over 300 works from the Library’s unique collection of oil paintings went on permanent public display in a dedicated picture gallery on the first floor of the Mitchell building. Paintings from the Collection has enjoyed critical acclaim and proved to be extremely popular with Library visitors.
In the lead up to the unveiling of Paintings from the Collection, the Foundation launched a special campaign to support the conservation and interpretation of the works selected for display. We invited donors to ‘sponsor’ these paintings and were overwhelmed by the wonderful response. Over 60 works have now been supported, with nearly $400,000 raised.
The paintings on display tell the story of our nation – its people and places, from early settlement to contemporary times: portraits as diverse as Phillip Parker King, Dame Mary Gilmore, Margaret Fink and Maria Little of Yulgilbar; evocative rural landscapes; studies of Sydney Harbour; and streetscapes showing life in our developing cities and suburbs. However, for many donors it was a personal connection to a painting that inspired them – a place associated with their family; a view from their house; a portrait of a person they admire; a seascape that reminded them of a loved one; a town in which they grew up.
