Telling a timely and incredibly complex story, this series is an important moment in Australian television. Inspired by true events and exploring the human interactions and emotions of those working in refugee detention centres — a contested and highly charged space — it positions Clare Kowitz, facility manager and all-round bureaucrat, at the centre of a tangled web of desperation, deception, human fragility and politics. Episode 6 brings all these things together in a chilling climax.
The script is immersive and evocative from the first page. It draws us in with finely crafted, concrete detail that takes us into the characters’ fears, desires and perspectives. Character and plot ooze from the page, with a pace and rhythm that makes us feel like we are living with the characters. This is not just a television script — it is a literary artefact that works on its own as a sad yet thrilling read.
