2022 - Shortlisted

Judges' Comments

This script tells a compelling and very personal story that is long overdue. The fact that we are possibly witnessing the tale of the first Aboriginal filmmaker makes it even more powerful. Documentary scripts can be challenging to read as they tend to be didactic and don’t always translate well to the page. True stories are hard to craft, as they don’t always follow a strong narrative line, and overall this work presents a very solid achievement.

We were swept along by the story of a Yorta Yorta man from the Cummeragunja Mission who, against insurmountable obstacles, carved a very important niche in Indigenous history. The writers’ personal connection to the story is evident in the detail and care taken in the telling of this remarkable tale, making the script a joy to read.
