Set in Scotland, The Bass Rock tells the story of three women from different generations who have each suffered great violence at the hands of men. Formally ambitious, the novel moves in a fragmented style between 1700 and the present, weaving these divergent narratives together. It is a superbly crafted work, which explores the pervasive impact of this violence and how it is passed down through time. The Bass Rock is permeated by a deep sense of foreboding and is a powerful and important novel in the literary gothic mode.
