Judges' Commnents

In Completely Normal (and Other Lies), Stella Wilde privately grieves the death of her secret first love, Isaac, and navigates a complicated relationship with his (also grieving, not secret) girlfriend Grace. When the true nature of her relationship with Isaac is revealed, Stella must contend with her past to forge her future.

Biffy James keenly observes teen life, often with humour and stinging precision. As the story unfolds, the extent of Stella’s unreliable narration becomes more apparent. The reader is encouraged to re-examine their protagonist, and the rich supporting cast that surrounds her. Tender and honest, Completely Normal (and Other Lies) is an acutely drawn and sensitive exploration of mental health, toxic relationships, grief, love and resilience that will resonate with young adult readers.
