After Story is a well-written rumination on so many things. A powerful underlying narrative of the missing child, and the emotional hand grenade of that loss, haunts the work. Larissa Behrendt provides her readers with a tour of England and its literary canon with Della and Jazzie/Jasmine as our mother-daughter guides. Their relationship and dialogue keep us connected to their hometown in rural New South Wales. With notes on the literary tour included at the end of the novel, readers can imagine how they too might go far from home to find their own home again.
A book that bridges classical English literature and life with contemporary Aboriginal love, life and ambition, After Story will possibly remain unique for many years to come.
