The suspense Lisa Fuller wields in Ghost Bird is exceptional and a sign of great things to come from such a startling debut. The task of bringing the spirit world into realistic depiction of contemporary Aboriginal and small-town Australian life is not an easy one, and Fuller does this with a deft and knowing hand. Ghost Bird keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, shrieking in recognition and humour, and nodding quietly at the more sombre moments.

While presented as young adult fiction, this novel is for anyone looking for a sharp, page-turning story with a literary underbelly. It’s a great read, too, for anyone interested in seeing more of Australia and of Aboriginal community, experience and belief.
