Oil Babies is a non-linear work for the stage for three female-identifying performers. It weaves together the science of climate change, impending mass extinction and the story of a couple thinking about having children. In the same way that its ideas move fluidly throughout, its characters are simultaneously narrators, experts and flawed human beings struggling with the idea of the responsibility for the future currently placed on all our shoulders.
Oil Babies is an exciting work for the way it examines the politics of climate change and particularly the way this plays out on women's bodies. Its lyrical style is impressive as is its understanding of the capabilities of how the work may be realised in live performance. It manages to be simultaneously insightful, playful and moving and is a notable work for both its ambition and the passionate realisation of the ideas at play.
