2022 - Shortlisted

Judges' Comments

This is an ambitious play of uncommon scope and substance. The year is 2030. With the climate crisis at breaking point, world leaders decide to take drastic but necessary action save the planet. A gas will be launched into the atmosphere, and for an entire year all 8.5 billion humans on Earth will hibernate so that the world can reset. But things don’t go according to plan.

Plays are not often set in the future and rarely engage with science fiction genres. This makes the achievement of Kruckemeyer’s work all the more remarkable. He manages to keep the speculative nature of the story alive, with much human detail. There is also considerable achievement in the play’s global scale, with settings including Australia, South America, Korea, Africa and the United States. But the global has ballast in the local, with the particularities of Adelaide playing a prominent part.
