This lively, well-researched and imaginative social history uses a street corner in Pyrmont and the hotel built on it, the Terminus, to tell a colourful and engaging story about Sydney and its people over almost two centuries. In Shirley Fitzgerald’s book, the city pub emerges as a site of politics and the law, as well as of leisure, community and sociability.

The Terminus witnessed many of the cultural and political battles over which the future of the inner city has been fought, affording us a unique perspective on the rise and fall of industrial society, the fluctuating fortunes of a working-class community and the decay and revival of a place now being recognised for its heritage value. Terminus: The Pub That Sydney Forgot reveals that the history of a small place need not be a small history.
