Our Magic Hour takes a close look at childhood trauma and loss. When Katy takes her own life, best friend Audrey is confronted not just with the immediate loss, but also with a past full of violence and neglect. We follow Audrey as the novel traces her relationship with Nick, a paramedic, as well as with her immediate family, who are all, in one way or another, trying to cope with the past.
Our Magic Hour is simultaneously a gentle and fierce read. The novel is brimming with excellent depictions and a quiet intensity. Although a story about sadness and the struggle to find a way out of grief, it is also a story of hope. The language sings and the city of Melbourne is brought to life in an unforgettable way. The characters of Our Magic Hour will remain with the reader long after the book is put down.
