Series 15: Letters received by Banks from David Burton, 1790-1794

Provenance note

The documents in this series were previously located at ML A83. They are part of an accession of Banks papers purchased by the Public Library of New South Wales from Sotheby's, London, in May 1929.

It is now not possible to reconstruct Banks' original arrangement, the series has therefore been arranged chronologically.

Background note

David Burton sailed to New South Wales in 1791 on board HMS Gorgon, where he took up the position of superintendent of convicts. He was further employed by Sir Joseph Banks as a collector for the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.

He died in New South Wales in April 1792 following a shooting accident.
