Everything except language
knows the meaning of existence.
Trees, planets, rivers, time
know nothing else. They express it
moment by moment as the universe.

Even this fool of a body
lives it in part, and would
have full dignity within it
but for the ignorant freedom
of my talking mind.

Australian poet and critic, born on this day 17th October 1938.

His poetry has won many awards and he is regarded as one of the leading poets of his generation. He has published around 30 volumes of poetry and is often called Australia’s Bush-bard

Les Murray has been rated by the National Trust of Australia as one of the 100 Australian Living Treasures.
