On this day in 1870 gold was discovered in Gulgong, New South Wales.

These photographs are from a collection of 3,500 glass-plate negatives held at the Library. The negatives were digitally scanned in a major project undertaken at the Library, and have been included in the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register.
