A smallpox outbreak in 1881 in Sydney led to many changes in the management of disease in New South Wales. This Plan of the western suburbs of Sydney shows the fatal cases of disease in Sydney in the first half of 1888 from measles, scarlet fever, diptheria, diarrhoea, cholera and dysentery. Particularly hard hit areas included Newtown, Balmain and Redfern. This map appeared in the NSW Legislative Assembly Votes and Proceedings for 1889.
