The ‘Monkey or Bear of New South Wales’ - now known as the Koala!

This incredible image comes from an album of notes and sketches taken during a surveying expedition by William Govett, on staff of Major Mitchell, Surveyor General of New South Wales, 1830-1835.

This image is on display alongside other depictions of this iconic Australian animal, including illustrations by Dorothy Wall, Norman Lindsay and Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, as part of the new exhibition at the State Library of New South Wales called

Australian Inspiration
