On this day, 3rd June 1769, Lieutenant James Cook observed the transit of Venus across the sun, from Tahiti, on the voyage in which he would later chart the east coast of Australia.

The State Library of New South Wales holds these manuscripts of Cook’s observations and many other documents relating to Cook’s voyages.
