Book Week fun with Phil Lesnie

male artist with materials at work

We were super excited to welcome Phil Lesnie to the Library this week to deliver both an onsite program and two virtual excursions. Phil is a talented illustrator/artist whose original work we have recently acquired for the Library collection.

His first two books - "Once a Shepherd" by Glenda Millard, and "A Soldier, a Dog and a Boy" by Libby Hathorn - were CBCA Notable Books in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Currently, he is working on titles by Phil Cummings, Zana Fraillon, and a new book with Libby Hathorn. He reports feeling very sleepy, and quite thrilled.

Phil works primarily in watercolour, because in a watercolour painting even mistakes look lovely, and he makes many!  Under Phil’s guidance students attending the onsite program created their own watercolour painting.

Phil is also a children’s bookseller and believes it is entirely possible that he hasn't read a title written for adults since he became one.

It was a delight to work with Phil to share his creative process and showcase the diversity of the Library’s collections with students from as far away as Manildra and Lue.
