Views from Moree

A recent addition to the pictorial collections of the Mitchell Library is a collection of photographs of Moree. N.S.W. and surrounding districts, dating from the end of the 19th and first decade of the 20th century.

The photographs have been attributed to Billington & Co. of Inverell by the Curator of Photographs, Mitchell Library.  The photographer had a branch in Moree from 1907 to 1911.  Some of the photographs of Moree were taken from the town’s water tank. The view of Heber Street above is typical of the high-angle viewpoint often shown by this photographer.  As well as showing the streetscape of shops we also see their yards with outhouses and tanks.  Another trait of this photographer is his arrangement of different groups in a photograph and the cinematic-like quality of his work.  This can be seen in the view of Ezzy’s Crossing, Gwydir River below.

The Library holds few pre-1920 photographs of Moree and none of this quality or condition.  Photographs chiefly of views of Moree and surrounding areas, and Bathurst, New South Wales, ca. 1895-1910 has been catalogued and the collection is currently being digitised.
