The annual word eXpress awards ceremony took place at the Library last night. Seventeen excited students were joined by their proud parents, grandparents, teachers and principals to celebrate the publication of their HSC major work in the word eXpress - Young Writers Showcase 18.
The English Extension 2 course requires a high level of independence from students as they work to produce an extended composition, known as a Major Work. This work can be presented in a variety of formats, and this year students produced scripts, short stories, performance poetry, speeches, critical responses and poems.
Jack Shanahan from Cranbrook School and Rosanna Gately from Merewether High School shared a little of their writing journey and read short excerpts from their award-winning work.
The Reflection Statements (a compulsory component of the course) produced by the students featured in the word eXpress - Young Writers Showcase anthology are accessible on the Library’s website. This is a popular resource for students currently undertaking English Extension 2. The HSC English Research Guide is an excellent place for students to begin their research and understand the many ways the Library can assist them in their studies.
The Library also offers a full day English Extension 2 student seminar – the next one will be held on Friday 1 November. Bookings will open on 16 September. This seminar is an opportunity for students to gain inspiration and advice before embarking on their major work. A combination of lectures and small group workshops will provide students with the opportunity to test their ideas and engage with experts in the area, including experienced teachers, librarians and high-achieving past students.
