Aborigine fishingc 1853

by Thomas Balcombe

This painting is by Thomas Balcombe, who would have encountered Aboriginal people while on surveying field trips around the New South Wales coast and inland to the Murray River, Bathurst and Goulburn during the 1830s and 1840s. Balcombe displays an interest in traditional Aboriginal life in many of his works. This fishing scene depicts an Aboriginal man in a classical heroic pose. His identity and the exact location are unknown.
