Artists' Book – Mapping Genealogies

Artist's Book - Mapping Genealogy 2013

By Penny Evans

Penny Evans is a Byron Bay-based artist with Aboriginal (Gomeroi), Welsh and German ancestry. Her artist’s book Mapping Genealogy is an account of her family’s Aboriginal heritage, a literal sewing together of the fragments that document her journey through Gomeroi country and history. It incorporates Evans’ own artwork and designs inspired by historical Gomeroi carvings. The photo on this page shows her Great Aunty Emma Maurer nee Richards from Mungindi on the NSW/Queensland border; the photo is stitched together with a map of the region. Mapping Genealogy has cloth binding with a variety of materials including digital prints, maps, emu feathers, stitching on paper, and threads.
