Gother Mann was born in Sydney in 1863. He studied architecture and, with English artist Charles Conder, began to paint views of the Hawkesbury area. He then studied under acclaimed artists Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton. In 1912 Mann was appointed as the first director of the Art Gallery of NSW, having begun work there originally as a temporary cataloguer. Under his directorship the gallery’s Australian collection was greatly increased.
