The landing place at Parramatta, Port Jacksonc 1809

by George William Evans

A solitary soldier guarding the Parramatta landing place appears an insubstantial military presence. In fact, small detachments of only three soldiers were an important part of widespread defensive measures for many years, often forming up with armed settlers as the core of larger militia forces.
