Tiles from the Sun Newspapers Ltd building, Sydneyc 1929
These decorative ceramic tiles depict Phoebus Apollo (god of the sun) driving a seven-horse chariot. Designed by the head of the art department of Sun Newspapers, Donald Sackville Bain, the emblem was intended to inspire exciting journalism and was incorporated into the masthead of The Sun newspaper. Bain’s design also featured throughout the Sun Newpapers building at 60–70 Elizabeth Street, Sydney, which was built in 1929 and still stands today. It is likely that the tiles were removed when the building was vacated by Fairfax in 1956.
