In To Africa - Lecture 1. H Rider Haggard
Join Susannah Fullerton OAM, as she journeys into the imaginations of three authors who were lured to the incomparable majesty of the African continent with her series IN TO AFRICA.
In this lecture she will uncover how in 1885 Sir H. Rider Haggard made a bet with his brother that he could write a novel as good as Treasure Island. The result was King Solomon’s Mines which proved to be a runaway bestseller. Set somewhere near today’s Zambia, the novel started a craze for adventurous books set on the ‘dark continent’. Today the book is fascinating for what it tells us about colonialist attitudes and the behaviour of ‘great white hunters’ in Africa.
