The old Devonshire Street Cemetery

Curator Elise Edmonds will explore the history of the old Devonshire Street cemetery, which used to sprawl across the sandhills at the south end of the city, where Central Station now stands. Elise will focus on some of the collection items from the Library which inspired the fascinating exhibition Dead Central. Join us online for the story of an extraordinary project taken on by two determined individuals to document the old cemetery before it was cleared to make way for Sydney’s Central Station.

Elise Edmonds is a senior curator at the Library. With a background in Australian history and Museum Studies, Elise has worked with the Library’s maps, pictures and manuscript collections. In 2019 Elise curated Dead Central, an exhibition about the fascinating story of the Devonshire St cemetery.
