The Learning Centre

Located on Ground floor in the Mitchell Library building, connect and learn in a space dedicated to inspiring curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. The Centre is a hands-on learning environment for school students, teachers and families.

Who the centre is for

Located on Ground floor in the Mitchell Library building next to the Play Space, The John B Fairfax Learning Centre provides opportunities for K-12 students, teachers and families to experience, respond to and create with the Library's collections. This purpose-built room was designed with input from children and students.

Teachers can book excursions that take place in the Centre for school groups. Outside of term time, the Library runs school holiday programs in the space.

Arriving at the Centre

Enter through a hidden door and down a magical four-metre tunnel filled with historic artefacts and manuscripts. You'll also find interactive technology highlighting the Library's collections.

At the end of the tunnel you emerge into a contemporary space filled with light from two enormous arched windows. When the Centre was built, these windows were exposed for the first time since the 1960s.
