Join ABC Radio Sydney’s Cassie McCullagh as she explores the Library’s collections and shares its secrets with Library curators.

11 am — Memories on Glass

Margot Riley will share the personal side of a collection of extraordinary images of late 19th and early 20th century Sydney, captured by the Macpherson family over 50-years. This recently acquired photonegative collection is a unique record of one Australian family.

12 noon  Tales from the First Fleet

The First Fleet journals are eyewitness accounts of the eight-month voyage from England to Sydney Cove and of life in the colony. Sarah Morley will share the stories behind the Library’s collection of First Fleet journals — the most comprehensive in the world.

1 pm  Gold Rush

Photographer Henry Beaufoy Merlin used a combination of self-promotion, hard work and horse-drawn photographic carts to make a success of his American & Australasian Photographic Company, resulting in the amazing Holtermann collection. Geoff Barker will uncover the curious character of Beaufoy Merlin.

2 pm  Diaries from the First World War

With a focus on the 1918 Armistice, Elise Edmonds will recount the Library’s extraordinary project to collect personal war diaries from returning servicemen and women, and some who never made it back home.

3 pm  Enemy Aliens

During the First World War, nearly 7000 people were interned in camps in Australia. Find out why and learn what happened to them during and after the war. Anna Corkhill will share the personal stories behind a collection of internees’ diaries, letters and photographs.
